Riding the Mae Hong Son Loop by Motorcycle – Discover Northern Thailand on Two Wheels

Ride the Most Scenic Curves of Northern Thailand with Classic Bike Adventure

If you’re dreaming of a real motorcycle trip in Thailand, you can’t miss the legendary Mae Hong Son Loop. This winding route is considered one of the most scenic motorcycle rides in all of Southeast Asia. The full loop covers approximately 650 kilometers, starting and ending in Chiang Mai, and takes you through Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son, and Pai – a true highlight for anyone who wants to experience Thailand by motorcycle.

Compared to the shorter Samoeng Loop, which is better suited for a day trip, the Mae Hong Son Loop is much longer – but it can still be comfortably completed in around four days. On our guided “Northern Thailand Motorcycle Tour”with Classic Bike Adventure, we don’t ride the entire loop. Instead, we focus deliberately on the most spectacular and rewarding sections, offering a perfect mix of riding pleasure, scenic variety, and authentic local encounters.

You’ll ride on reliable, well-maintained touring bikes that are ideally suited for the curvy mountain roads of Northern Thailand. Our fleet includes the Honda CB 500 X, the new Honda NX 500, the iconic Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, the classic Royal Enfield Bullet 500, and the comfortable Suzuki V-Strom 650 – all excellent choices for riders who want the perfect balance of handling, power, and touring comfort.

On Day Nine of our tour, we leave the dreamy provincial capital of Mae Hong Son, also known as the “City of Three Mists.” Not long after departure, the road begins to twist and turn through dense mountain jungle and over spectacular passes. The 110-kilometer stretch from Mae Hong Son to Pai takes us deep into the wild heart of Northern Thailand – and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful sections of the Mae Hong Son Loop.

With more than 1,000 curves, this day’s ride is pure motorcycle bliss – and a definite highlight of any serious motorcycle tour in Thailand.

The scenery changes dramatically as we ride: after the deep green of the rainforest, the valley opens up, the vegetation thins, and by the afternoon we reach the well-known town of Pai. Pai is a charming mix of hippie vibes, cafés, street food, and hot springs – the perfect place to unwind with a cold drink and relive the day’s ride.

This stage of the tour perfectly illustrates why we only ride selected parts of the Mae Hong Son Loop on our Thailand motorcycle tours. Between Mae Hong Son and Pai, all the elements that make this region so unique come together: technical riding challenges, diverse landscapes, and cultural insights into the Land of Smiles.

If you’re not just looking to clock miles but truly want to experience Thailand by motorcycle, this is the ride for you.
